Background of the Study
Ethics courses are integral components of nursing education, as they help students develop the critical thinking and moral reasoning skills necessary to navigate complex clinical scenarios. These courses focus on guiding students to make informed, ethical decisions in patient care, respecting patient autonomy, and adhering to the standards and codes of conduct in nursing practice (Suleiman & Adeola, 2023). In nursing, ethical decision-making is vital for providing high-quality care, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining professional integrity (Ajayi & Aliyu, 2024). The importance of ethics in nursing education cannot be overstated, as students are often confronted with difficult decisions involving patient confidentiality, consent, and end-of-life care (Michele & Olamide, 2024).
At Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery, ethics courses are integrated into the nursing curriculum to equip students with the ability to make ethical decisions in clinical practice. However, it remains unclear to what extent these courses influence students’ decision-making abilities and whether they adequately prepare students to handle ethical dilemmas they might face in healthcare settings. This study aims to examine the impact of ethics courses on the decision-making skills of nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery and assess whether these courses effectively enhance students' ethical reasoning and professional practice.
Statement of the Problem
Although ethics courses are taught in nursing programs, the extent of their impact on students' decision-making skills remains largely unexplored, particularly in the context of Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery. Without a thorough understanding of how these courses influence nursing students’ decision-making abilities, it is difficult to evaluate their effectiveness or make improvements to better prepare students for the ethical challenges they will face in clinical practice. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing the impact of ethics courses on students' decision-making skills.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of ethics courses on the decision-making skills of nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery.
2. To examine how ethics courses influence students' ability to make ethical decisions in clinical practice.
3. To propose recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of ethics courses in nursing education.
Research Questions
1. How do ethics courses impact the decision-making skills of nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery?
2. To what extent do ethics courses prepare nursing students to make ethical decisions in clinical settings?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve the teaching of ethics in nursing education?
Research Hypotheses
1. Ethics courses significantly enhance the decision-making skills of nursing students.
2. Nursing students who complete ethics courses demonstrate better ethical decision-making in clinical practice than those who do not.
3. Improving the content and delivery of ethics courses will enhance nursing students' decision-making abilities.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at Bayelsa State College of Nursing and Midwifery and examine the impact of ethics courses on their decision-making skills. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the variability in the quality of ethics education across different cohorts of students.
